- Diovan contains valsartan. - Valsartan blocks the effect of angiotensin II, which tightens blood vessels and raises blood pressure. - When the effect of angiotensin II is blocked, blood vessels relax and blood pressure falls. - Valsartan is a prescription medicine used to: - In adults to lower high blood pressure (hypertension). - Valsartan may be used alone or with other blood pressure medicines. - To treat heart failure in adults. - Valsartan may help reduce your need for hospital treatment that occurs with heart failure. - Adults with certain types of heart failure, to increase the chance of living longer after a heart attack (myocardial infarction). - Valsartan should not be used to treat high blood pressure in children under 1 year of age. - It is not known if valsartan is safe and effective in children with certain kidney problems.
